My partner at the time seemed to care more about how reflected on them.

Those who wanted to see me bear the brunt of everyone's pain did all they could to ruin me financially. JW: Well, the powers that be attempted to fully shut down my career. How much did that affect your career and how did you cope with the backlash? Despite that by all accounts she never saw your tweet and so it couldn't have caused her death, publicly you were blamed for her suicide. NN: After August Ames took her own life you became the black sheep of porn. Maybe because the alternative-to submit to another’s will-would be an assault on his core being as a “dominant individual,” or, in fetish terms, a “domme.” For Wheeler, redemption has come not through begging his colleagues for forgiveness, but by rejecting the “hypocrisy” of the mainstream porn community. His defiance and steadfast refusal to fall into line has cost him work, but it’s a price he’s been willing to pay. Like so many of us who have found a home in adult film, Wheeler can be a handful. After August Ames died, Wheeler became that enemy, and to stand with him meant to stand on the wrong side of the porn community. When the industry takes a position for or against something (or someone) there is great pressure to conform, or risk being viewed as an enemy. But perception is often more important than truth-especially in the land of smoke and mirrors known as Porn Valley. He was one of the best actors I’d ever worked with, his sex scenes were always incredible, and it was clear that he was not the reason August took her life. I was directing gay porn on a regular basis at the time, and it bothered me that I could no longer book Jaxton Wheeler. His upcoming bookings were cancelled and his phone stopped ringing. But such details didn’t matter the industry needed a scapegoat, and it focused its collective guilt and pain on Jaxton Wheeler. In truth, Ames had never even seen the tweet-she had already passed when he wrote it. Mainstream news media came calling, and a narrative emerged that his tweet had been the tipping point for Ames, and likely the reason she had ended her life. Jaxton Wheeler’s final tweet to Ames was a directive to apologize for her tweets or “take a cyanide pill.” Hours later, it was reported that Ames had taken her own life.Īfter Ames’ death, Wheeler became a poster boy for online bullying. This set off a vicious online feud between the gay and straight porn communities, during which Ames tried to explain herself but eventually gave up and tweeted “Fuck y’all” before logging off for the last time. Wheeler, along with dozens of adult industry workers, had responded angrily to several of Ames’ tweets suggesting it was a health risk to work with “crossover” talent (male performers who work in both straight and gay porn). When adult film star August Ames took her own life in December 2017, one person received the lion’s share of blame for her death: Jaxton Wheeler.
